The NYU Langone Weight Loss Management program actively participates in clinical trials that help advance the practice of weight-loss medicine.

Our current research initiatives include:

1. A Pilot Study of Metabolic Effects of Omentectomy in Obese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Treated with Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB)

Study ID #: 07-178

Study Purpose: Determine the effect of omentectomy on improving/resolving diabetes.
Test Procedure: Omentectomy

If you have type 2 diabetes and are planning to have laparoscopic gastric banding surgery, you may be qualified for the study.

Study Period: 8 weeks

2. A prospective, open-label study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Lap-Band® Adjustable Gastric Band (LAGB®) Operations in the Treatment of Morbidly Obese Adolescents

Study Purpose: to make the laparoscopic band device available to obese adolescents.

If you/your child is one of obese adolescents with a BMI greater than 40 kg/m2, laparoscopic gastric banding surgery may be an option for obese adolescents (14-17 years old) who are at a higher risk for early death and development of medical problems.

Study Period: 5 years

Study Status: Open for only qualified subjects.

3. A Prospective Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of Gastric Banding Operations for patients with BMI between 30-40 kg/m2:

Study Purpose: to offer the laparoscopic band device to patients with a lower BMI.

If you are overweight (BMI between 30-40 kg/m2) and your weight problem is the cause of your health problems including diabetes, surgery may be an option for patients.

Study Period: 5 years

4. Adolescent Lap-Band Multi-Center Trial - "Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (lap-Band) As a Treatment for Morbid Obesity in Adolescents

Study Purpose: to make the laparoscopic gastric band device available to obese adolescents.

Study Purpose:

To review and study the medical records of many individuals to answer questions about the nature and treatment of diseases such as yours.

To identify and recruit patients who are eligible for participation in future research studies.
